END OF SEASON MDC REPORT

Multichoice Diski Challenge (MDC) coach Siya Mdluli believes Maritzburg could have challenged harder
for title honours, but is pleased that the primary objectives were achieved.

The Team of Choice Reserve side finished in a very credible third position after the conclusion of the 2017/18 MDC season last weekend, finishing behind champions Golden Arrows and Bloemfontein Celtic.

Having been in the title mix right up until the final two weeks, Mdluli was slightly disappointed, but nevertheless takes heart from the overall performances his young charges gave this season, as he explains in his report:

“We started off really well, going eight games unbeaten. After 10 games, we had a bit of a slump, as more of our Diski players were being chosen for the first team squad.

“So it affected us, we had to promote some young players from our Castle under-19 side. It was a bit shaky, trying to get the balance. But it was a learning process, and of course we were very happy to see the players from the MDC team making the first team; that’s our objective.

“In this respect I think we have done very well – the players have taken huge steps forward. It shows that the players from the MDC side going up to the first team have the right requirement of ability, skill and hard work.

“I’m not happy though that we dropped points in the last five matches. The 0-1 loss to Baroka at home was a big setback. Also the 0-2 defeat to Chiefs in Makhulong, and the 2-2 home draw with Platinum Stars, those games proved decisive in us not winning the championship.

“Nevertheless I know where we went wrong and I know where we can improve next season. The boys were ready, they worked hard, the young players showed they can be professional players, any time they have a chance. It’s key that they learn from any mistakes, and strive for consistency.

“Now we will find ways to keep them fit, to give them practice matches, so they can stay sharp and be ready and competitive so we can hopefully get more players from the MDC team and Castle side into the first team.”
