MARITZBURG LEAVE JOBURG EMPTY HANDED

A late goal cost Maritzburg United a share of the spoils as they lost 2-1 to defending champions Bidvest Wits in an Absa Premiership game on Tuesday night.

The Clever Boys netted a 15th minute goal through Keegan Ritchie and although Maritzburg were able to level the game in the 78th minute when Mohau Mokate scored, Buhle Mkhwanazi was to find an 84th minute winner for Wits.

Early play saw the tackles flying in with no place for the feint-hearted at the Bidvest Stadium.

Maritzburg keeper Richard Ofori made an eighth minute stop from Elias Pelembe but could do little seven minutes later to keep out a brilliant free kick from Ritchie.

More chances followed for Wits and Ofori did well to deny Lehlohonolo Majoro before coming to United’s rescue with a brave point blank save on James Keene seven minutes before half time.

The Team of Choice came out with purpose after half time, but battled to create clear-cut chances.

But after Ofori made a brilliant save to keep out Cole Alexander, United were back on level terms when Mohau scored on the break 12 minutes from time.

But Mkhwanazi was to head in a Pelembe corner six minutes before the end of regulation time to make it 2-1.
