FRANSMAN READY TO LEAD UNITED INTO BATTLE

Maritzburg United captain Bevan Fransman is rallying the troops to get back to winning ways when they host Cape Town City on Saturday night in the Absa Premiership.

The Team of Choice head into Saturday’s encounter at the Harry Gwala Stadium (8-15pm) in fourth position on the standings, having lost 2-1 to Bidvest Wits up in Johannesburg on Tuesday night.

As the season end quickly draws near, Fransman says it’s especially important that United dig deep into their character reserves and come up with a strong performance against the Citizens.

“We have to take the Bidvest Wits loss on the chin,” said the skipper. “Take nothing away from the free kick Keegan Ritchie scored, and then we had to chase the game a bit. We managed to have most of the possession against Wits, but they did well to defend and keep out our attacks.

“Now we have to make sure we start winning again, get some momentum going into the last five games of the league season.”

Maritzburg beat Benni McCarthy’s City side 4-2 in the first round. And while the Citizens have also struggled in the league of late, they will make for very tricky opposition in the KZN capital.

“Everybody in the Maritzburg camp knows the importance of getting a result against Cape Town City,” Fransman stated. “It’s going to be a tough game, because they also lost to Golden Arrows midweek and so both teams want to bounce back with a win.

“City play good football, they have a good passing game, they play proper entertaining football – like us they like playing with the ball at their feet.

“They’re coming off the loss to Sundowns also in the Nedbank Cup, so there will be a backlash to their game, they’re probably thinking they should be in the top five in the league (City are sixth).

“So there will be a big, big push coming our way and we have to match that,” Fransman cautioned. “They are a squad with good quality. A player like Surprise Ralani had a storming game against Sundowns. “

In team news, Fortune Makaringe and Deolin Mekoa will both be available again after missing the midweek game through suspension.
