FADLU: SUNDOWNS WILL PUNISH MISTAKES

Head coach Fadlu Davids feels that Maritzburg will have to step it up a few notches if they are to stand a chance of beating Mamelodi Sundowns in Sunday’s Nedbank Cup semi-final showdown.

The Team of Choice take on Masandawana at the Harry Gwala Stadium (3pm, Sunday, click HERE for ticket info) looking to book their spot in the 2018 Nedbank Cup final. And they approach the game on the back of a positive result, a 2-0 away win against Baroka FC last weekend.

Coach Fadlu was pleased with the result, and also with the fact that United surpassed their previous best points tally in a season of 40.

But he’s aware that the challenge against the Brazilians is a huge one and wants to ensure there is absolutely no complacency within the squad.

“I’m happy with the clean sheet (against Baroka), though I really felt we could have scored five or six with the chances we created. We take the result and now concentrate on meeting Sundowns in the semi-final,” said the former Maritzburg striker.

“It’s a fantastic achievement so far, 42 points, the best ever for the club. And that is what we are celebrating now, that we’re in the top eight. You dream about the silverware, for the players it’s something to push for. We’re in the top eight now, we can’t relax as there are still three matches left (in the league) and we want to achieve maximum.

“But, our focus has to shift immediately to the cup. If we make mistakes like we did against Baroka, Sundowns will punish us. We’re playing the best team in the history of Sundowns, the best team in the history of South Africa. We need each and every player to be at their best, 100 percent.”

Team of Choice midfielder Lebohang Maboe also emphasised that the players must ensure they are in the right frame of mind for Sunday.
“The hard work we put in at training is paying off,” he said. “It’s a big thing for us being in the semi-final, because at the start of the season one of our goals was to reach a final, and now we are just one step away. We are keeping calm, being humble and not getting ahead of ourselves. The coach is doing a good job in keeping us humble.”
