The Team of Choice made history when they beat former African champions Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 in front of a packed Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday to reach their first ever cup final.
This after showing great character to come back from conceding the opening goal after just a minute played.
Makaringe, one of many stand-out performers for United in midfield this season, was involved in Lebohang Maboe's brilliant equaliser just before half time, and capped off a fine personal display when he planted a composed finish in at the near post just before full time to complete a joyous day for the Team of Choice faithful.
The 24-year-old Makaringe was however not interested in personal accolades and credited the team effort, as well as the self belief which coach Fadlu Davids has instilled at the club.
"All credit to the team. We were playing against a world class team. Without any doubt Mamelodi Sundowns is a world class team," Makaringe said.
“We had to come out here and do it for everyone who has been behind us all the way. We were very determined to win this game.
“We knew the purpose of being in a team was greater than the individual. Everyone had to come out and do it for the team.
“Our coach always encourages us to believe. We need to believe in our abilities. I think it paid off at the end of the day.”
The final against Free State Stars will take place in Cape Town on May 19.
Before then, Maritzburg have their final three league games to play, including Wednesday's showdown with Sundowns at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
