MARITZBURG GO DOWN TO CHIEFS

Maritzburg United were on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline against Kaizer Chiefs in an Absa Premiership match at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Goals from Gustavo Paez and Dumisani Zuma paved the way to victory for chiefs against a Maritzburg side which never really got going with their usual enterprising play.

After an evenly balanced start, Chiefs had the first chance of the afternoon when George Maluleka, fired a shot over the bar from a promising position.

Maluleka then had a goal disallowed after scoring from close range in the 20th minute before Paez drew first blood in the 29th minute when his shot took a bit of a deflection before beating Maritzburg keeper Bongani Mpandle.

The hosts had more chances as Maluleka fired wide from range before Bernard Parker skied an effort over the bar a few minutes before half time.

The lead was doubled in the 67th minute when substitute Dumisani Zuma ran onto a through ball and neatly lobbed the on-rushing Mpandle, the ball hitting the upright before going in.

Maritzburg never realy threatened to come back and the match ended 2-0 to Chiefs as the Soweto side nosed themselves above the Team of Choice and into third spot.
