MARITZBURG FIGHT BACK TO DRAW KZN DERBY

A gutsy performance saw Maritzburg United earning a 1-1 draw with Golden Arrows in their final league game of the season in front of a packed house at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

The Durban side scored first through an 18th minute Lerato Lamola goal, but United stormed back with a Fortune Makaringe equaliser in the 87th minute to seal an historic fourth-placed finish for the Pietermaritzburg club.

The game got off to a lively opening as Velemseni Ndwandwe fired wide and Danny Venter had his free kick saved by Richard Ofori before Deolin Mekoa smashed in a shot which was kept out by Abafan bes’Thende keeper Nkosingiphile Gumede.

Just when United were getting a hold of the game, Lamola put Arrow ahead by firing in from a Lehlohonolo Nonyane cross.

The Team of Choice came storming back and had another chance in the 38th minute when Mekoa fired a shot wide. But despite the home side’s efforts for the remainder of the first half, they could not find a breakthrough.

There was another chance just after the restart, but this time Bandile Shandu was unable to find the target.

Fadlu Davids' team continued to press for an equaliser, but Gumede did well to tip a Shandu shot over the bar, and also made a great save to keep out Mxolisi Kunene.

United though were not planning to let their fans go home empty handed and they fought back to level a thrilling derby three minutes before the end of regulation play when Makaringe netted.

Maritzburg now turn their attention to the Nedbank Cup final against Free State Stars in Cape Town next Saturday.
