TEAM OF CHOICE GEAR UP FOR PREMIERS CUP

Maritzburg United are looking forward to what promises to be a highly competitive derby showdown against Golden Arrows in the 2018 KZN Premiers Cup on Saturday.

The Team of Choice are one of seven teams from the KwaZulu-Natal Province taking part in the tournament, the others being Arrows, AmaZulu, and National First Division quartet Royal Eagles, Uthongathi FC, Real Kings and Richards Bay.

United play Arrows in a quarter-final clash at the Princess Magogo Stadium, scheduled for 3pm on Saturday.

It's arguably the toughest draw Maritzburg could have had, but it will certainly provide head coach Fadlu Davids with a yard-stick in terms of how his squad, including new signings such as Keagan Buchanan, Nazeer Aliie, Denwin Farmer, Sizwe Muthwa and Tholang Masegela, is shaping up.

"We are very privileged to be part of this tournament. The tournament makes the province stronger and makes the teams participating stronger," coach Fadlu said.

"You normally schedule a friendly one week before to get that game rhythm going. But of course playing Arrows (who the Team of Choice face in their opening league match), might change the thinking a little bit, but I’m sure we will put our strongest team out."

Team of Choice skipper, the Durban-born Siyanda Xulu, is anticipating a full-blooded derby encounter, despite the ‘pre-season’ status of the match.

"It’s a derby, that says it all and you don't need to elaborate more. We know it’s going to be a fight, it’s all about the pride of the province. Golden Arrows has been doing well, we have done well, so it’s not going to be only about who is the best in the province, but who wants to proceed to the semi-final and the final," Xulu said.
