MAKARINGE UP FOR THE CHALLENGE

By keeping a united front, working hard and remaining humble, midfielder Fortune Makaringe is confident Maritzburg United can maintain the same high standards set last season.

The Team of Choice are busy gearing up for their opening Absa Premiership fixture of the 2018/ 19 campaign when they host Golden Arrows in a KZN derby at the Harry Gwala Stadium this Sunday, 3pmkick off.

Expectations will naturally be high after Maritzburg finished fourth last season and also went all the way to the Nedbank Cup final.

But Makaringe, one of United’s stand-out performers last season, is adamant that with much the same personnel as last season, the KZN capital city side can look forward to another successful campaign.

“The language stays the same,” he said. “We are still the same team, with the same vision we had last season. We always have to find ways to improve ourselves, but the philosophy remains the same.

“Like my team-mates, we are all here to help the team grow. So I need to do all I can to help the team wherever I can.

“Yes, the pressure is always there. Whether you’re performing or not performing, the pressure is there. So you always need to approach each and every training session and game, knowing that as a professional you will always have pressure. I just need to focus on what I do best.”

Having been edged out 0-1 by Abafana bes’Thende last week in the KZN Premiers Cup, Makaringe knows full well the size of the task this weekend, but is quietly confident his side can prevail.

“Playing against Arrows we know it’s going to be difficult, knowing we actually lost to them last week in the Premier Cup. Whoever is playing needs to do everything they can – I believe if we put in the performance as a team, the result will take care of itself,” he pointed out.

There will always be ups and down in any season, but the important thing, Makaringe says, is to stay composed, and to face any challenges together as a team united.

“We must take a professional approach,” explained the ball wizard. “Winning or losing, we need to stay calm and composed and believe we can fix whatever needs to be fixed, so there were lessons learnt last season.

“If we stick together and we remind one another what our goals and vision are, I think that will help us to handle expectations. Every supporter expects their team to do well. But if stick together as a unit, we will be better off.”
