UNITED BRACED FOR ARROWS PACE

A well-structured defence and a blistering counter-attack are the challenges Maritzburg United face in their opening league game against Golden Arrows.

The first round 2018/19 Absa Premiership fixture takes place at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday, kick off set for 3pm.

And it will of course be the second time in a week the two clubs meet after last week’s pre-season tournament in Durban.

“Arrows have the advantage after beating us two years in a row in the KZN Premiers Cup,” Team of Choice head coach Fadlu Davids conceded.

“So we expect Arrows to come here looking for all three points and a very tough game, all the preparation we have done now goes into the 90 minutes. Now it’s the final test, we got a taste last week, we lost, and now hopefully we can correct a few things and get the result on Sunday,” he continued.

“They are one of the best counter-attacking sides in the league and very organised defensively. Deadly on the counter. You close the one side and the pace hits you on the other side, so we really have to be well organised, but also not be afraid to play our game.

“We shouldn’t be too proud about having 70 percent possession in our last game against Arrows at the Harry Gwala Stadium and still drawing the game.

“We have to be aware of their pace on the counter and in their side. Clinton Larsen and Mandla Ncikazi, a good combination they have in their technical team.”

Key for United this season will not be to rest on their laurels from last season’s sensational campaign, and the coach says this is an area he has addressed at length.

“It’s long chats, it’s long talks, to control the players’ thinking, to not get lost in the expectation and all the hype about what we overachieved last season,” he said.

On player availability, coach Fadlu revealed:

“The new players still need time. Denwin Farmer came from SuperSport with an injury, so the first two weeks he missed, while he was getting his rehabilitation right.

“Keegan Buchanan not playing for two years, now he has been doing a full pre-season with us, so he needs some time as well to adjust to our style and how we are doing things, but definitely available for selection.

“Nazeer Allie is in week two of his pre-season, so still a couple of weeks before he will be available.

“Brian Onyango is now in his second week of pre-season after doing a full rehabilitation, so he will also still need a couple of weeks.”
