COACH FADLU EXPECTING AN ATTACKING, ENTERTAINING GAME

Maritzburg United head coach Fadlu Davids will stay true to his philosophies and set out his team with attacking intent against Cape Town City on Sunday.

The Team of Choice take on the Citizens at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday (3pm), with a place in the MTN8 semi-finals up for grabs.

United are yet to win this season after being edged out by Golden Arrows and then Free State Stars, but that will in no way affect coach Fadlu’s approach, as he remains confident in his men.

“We have to look at the manner in which we stop the counter-attacks. We can’t say we are going to stop attacking because we get caught on the counter.

“We have to attack, it’s part of football, to be able to win matches,” he explained. “It’s what you do in the five seconds after you lose the ball which is important. So we have to improve our defensive shape, that’s something we need to tweak and get right.

“They are a fantastic side, Benni McCarthy has built something, solid in defence, fluid in attack, they have got these quick exciting wingers who can change a game. All over the pitch they have quality and we expect a tough game, an entertaining game as both teams like to attack. We’ll have to be at our best to go through.”

The Team of Choice mentor again gave his backing to his side’s defence and believes it was not necessarily errors which led to goals conceded, but rather individual brilliance on behalf of the opponent.

“Our defence has been solid, you can’t say it’s an error when someone (Arrows striker Lionel Mutizwa) scores a world-class bicycle goal, while for the second goal we were caught on the counter-attack late on trying to push numbers up to get an equaliser.”

In team news, United are expected to have a clean bill of health for the match against City, who have taken three points from their opening two league matches.

In last season’s two league encounters, Maritzburg beat Cape Town City 4-2 in Durban (the game was moved from the Mother City due to drought) and drew 1-1 at home in Pietermaritzburg.
