BRAVE UNITED HOLD AMAKHOSI

Maritzburg United survived playing 75 minutes with 10 men to claim a 0-0 Absa Premiership draw against Kaizer Chiefs at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday.

The KZN side had made a bright start to the game, but suffered a setback in the 16th minute after Siphesihle Ndlovu was sent off after a foul on Siyabonga Ngezana.

Before that, the Team of Choice had enjoyed the first opportunity of the game when Bandile Shandu shot wide after a great cross from Deolin Mekoa on six minutes.

There was also a chance for Mekoa just after the goal had been conceded, but his effort veered marginally wide.

From then on, it was very much about Maritzburg’s character and grit and that was in no short supply from Head Coach Fadlu Davids’ charges on a rainy night in the KZN capital city.

Despite United’s brave efforts, Chiefs did have some chances, but Khama Billiat misfired from close range before Hendrick Ekstein’s shot skimmed off the post.

Maritzburg continued to work overtime after the break to keep Chiefs at bay, and it was only in the 71st minute when a chance arrived for the Soweto giants after Daniel Cardoso shot wide.

Siphiwe Tshabalala then drew a save out of Richard Ofori and Billiat went close from range before Rushine de Reuck put in a brilliant tackle to stop Cardoso scoring in added time, typifying the committed performance from the Pietermaritzburg side.
