UNITED TARGET TURNAROUND

Its been more than two weeks since Maritzburg United’s last competitive outing. A hard fought draw against Kaizer Chiefs saw the club register their first point of the season.

Up next for United is a home match against Bidvest Wits on 15 September.

Ahead of the clash against the Clever Boys, the squad continues to work hard in training. Midfielder, Bandile Shandu says the team has assessed their start to the campaign and are working tirelessly to improve.

“If you look back at the games we have played, we have not played badly,” Shandu said.

The 23-year-old who hails from Pietermaritzburg says teams are well prepared for them following the heroics of last season.

“We need to work harder because more teams are scared of us which means that they will sit back and defend and make the spaces for us to play small,” Shandu explained.

He continued , “Most teams are showing us respect and analysing each player so they know our strengths and weaknesses. Its not going to be easy but we just need to work harder and the results will take care of itself.”

Shandu made 30 appearances in the ABSA Premiership last season where he played mostly at right-wing-back for the Team of Choice but says that he thrives on the extra responsibility that is placed on him by coach, Fadlu Davids when he is selected to play in the heart of midfield.

“It’s nice being a versatile player. I am enjoying contributing to the team,” he said.

Shandu is eager to improve on the three goals and as many assists he registered in the previous campaign. He says he has grown tremendously under the guidance of Davids.

“As a player you always want to improve. If you feel comfortable in what you have achieved then you are not going to improve,” he said.

“I get the licence to go up the field and take players on because the coach knows my strength is my speed. Coach encourages me to go up and add numbers in the box and that has helped my game a lot,” Shandu concluded.
