COACH FADLU LAUDS 'NEVER-SAY-DIE' UNITED

Saturday's 0-0 draw with Bidvest Wits has lead Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids to believe that his side will soon be firing on all cylinders.

The Team of Choice did well to contain log leaders the Clever Boys at the Harry Gwala Stadium and could even have claimed maximum points had they taken one of several decent opportunities.

“Lots of positives,” an upbeat coach Fadlu revealed. “First half was a fantastic situation and I’m proud if how the players worked and how they played. Second half losing Rushine De Reuck really upset things, we had to change the formation around.

“Yes we gave Wits opportunities by not concentrating, but we also had a huge chance at the end to grab it through Mohau Mokate, there were two opportunities to steal the points.”

Perhaps the biggest plus point for the Maritzburg technical team was the commitment shown across the park from the home players on Saturday.

“It was not a pretty game, it was ugly, lots of balls into the box by Wits, fighting for the second ball, it was bit like a rugby game,” coach Fadlu explained.

“It can be the start of great things when the team shows character, fighting spirit, unity and never-say-die attitude. This is definitely the recipe for success. You can see now with two clean sheets, you can see how we fought Kaizer Chiefs with 10 men (a 0-0 draw).

“[Wits] wanted to bully us, they wanted to make it a fight and a long ball, second ball game, and we matched them. Had we taken our chances it would have been a different story.

“The players can feel proud, yes we didn’t score, but we created chances, unlocking them tactically like we wanted.”

In terms of converting goals, the coach is also optimistic that new arrival Yannick Zakri, who debuted against the Students, will soon be up and running.

“Zakri did well. Zakri, Keletso Makgwala, Andrea Fileccia, they have to build communication. I’m quite happy with how they operated, especially in the first half.

“It will get better when they know the movements of each other, the non-verbal communication, the understanding between each other has to be built and it will come with more games.”
