COSTI KEEPS FEET ON THE GROUND

At the age of 16, Constandino Christodoulou is a star on the rise at Maritzburg United.

The teenage goalkeeper was brought in by former coach Ernst Middendorp two years ago and has quickly established himself as one of South Africa’s top juniors.

Costi, as he is nicknamed, recently returned from the Under-17 Cosafa Cup in Maurituis where he captained Amajimbos to a runners-up finish.

Upon his return, Christodoulou was drafted into the Team of Choice MultiChoice Challenge Diski team earning a start in coach, Siya Mdluli’s side for the first game of the season against Mamelodi Sundowns two weeks ago.

“I am very grateful to be in the setup of such a big time at such a young age. I am so happy to be here,” Christodoulou said.

The Hilton College pupil started his junior career at the Mpumalanga Black Aces Academy before joining the Team of Choice.

Under coach Fadlu Davids and goalkeeper coach, Authur Bartman, Costi has grown in leaps and bounds in recent months.

“Coach Fadlu constantly motivates me. Coach Arthur is one of the best in the country and pushes me at every training session,”Christodoulou said.

“I have also learnt a lot from experienced players like Bevan Fransman last season, Siyanda Xulu and of course, Ghana’s number one Richard Ofori."

Christodoulou says he learnt a lot on tour with Amajimbos and hopes to break into the PSL in the coming years.

“It is very different playing with full time pros and then going to age group football," he added. "It was very tactical and I enjoyed working with coach, Molefi Ntseki. I was happy to captain the side and to play was great.

“I am trying to keep my feet on the ground and hope to get more Diski games under my belt.”

The 2018/19 MDC season is still in its infancy with only two matches played by all the teams so far.

United have lost both matches, but will be hoping for a return to winning ways when they host Chippa United at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday morning. Kick-off is at 10h00.
