UNITED HOLD ON FOR FIRST LEAGUE WIN

Maritzburg United withstood a second half fightback from Bloemfontein Celtic to record a 1-0 Absa Premiership win at the Dr Molemela Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

With a game or more in hand on all the other 15 teams in the league, the victory moves United up to 13th spot on the table and it was also their third consecutive clean sheet.

Maritzburg were off to the perfect start when with exactly a minute on the clock Bandile Shandu beat an on-rushing Celtic keeper Patrick Tignyemb from the edge of the box following a brilliant through ball from Fortune Makaringe.

The momentum stayed with the Team of Choice as Yannick Zakri cut in from the left flank on 16 minutes and missed narrowly at the far post, before Keletso Makgalwa had an effort blocked a couple of minutes later.

Celtic though were close to equalising on the half hour mark when Tshegofatso Mabasa’s rising volley glanced off the upright and went over goal.

The second half saw the visitors enjoying more of the play as they pushed and probed for a way back into the game while Maritzburg were looking to hit on the counter.

Some organised defending by the KZN side saw Phunya Sele Sele’s chances limited as Ndumiso Mabena and Tebogo Mpontsane fired wide from range before Mbhazima Rikhotso’s volley flew over the bar with 20 minutes to play.

Andrea Fileccia looked to try and give United some breathing space when he fired in a 75th minute shot from the edge of the area, but he missed at the near post.

At the other end, Given Mashikinya miss-hit a shot from a good position before the Team of Choice survived a goalmouth scramble with 10 minutes to play.

The remainder of the game saw Maritzburg doing well to limit Celtic’s chances, goalkeeper Richard Ofori not overly tested as coach Fadlu Davids’ men held on for the morale-boosting three pointer.
