KZN DERBY ENDS ALL SQUARE IN UMLAZI

Maritzburg United extended their unbeaten run to four matches with a 0-0 Absa Premiership KZN derby draw against AmaZulu at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Tuesday night.

The result, secured through a fourth clean sheet for the Team of Choice, moves them up to 11th spot.

After Siyethemba Sithebe and Bongi Ntuli had sniffs at goal for Usuthu early on, United midfielder Keletso Makgalwa put Yannick Zakri through in the 13th minute, but after he went around goalkeeper Siyabonga Mbatha, his parting shot was cleared off the line. The Ivorian then teed Makgalwa from the rebound, but this time the shot was fired over the bar.

It was AmaZulu though who ended the half strongly as Marc van Heerden fired a powerful effort wide, before Emiliano Tade sent a header and a shot off target.

Maritzburg were close to going in front just after the interval when Justice Figuareido did well to make space for a shot, only for Mbatha to pull off a fantastic save.

Figuareido continued to create problems for the AmaZulu defence, but had a rifling shot saved by Mbatha, before being denied again by the home goalkeeper with a tamer attempt.

AmaZulu also had opportunities to win the game as Nhlanhla Vilakazi crashed a long range shot wide before Sithebe also missed the target and then former Maritzburg man Michael Morton squandered a stoppage time chance for the Durban team.

The Team of Choice now turn their focus to Friday night’s league clash with Cape Town City at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
