UNITED SET FOR SHOWDOWN WITH CUP CHAMPS

Maritzburg United welcome Cape Town City to the Harry Gwala Stadium for the second time this season for an Absa Premiership fixture on Friday night.

The two sides met in the opening round of the MTN8, with the Cape side edging to a 1-0 win.

City of course went on to win the top eight cup last week against SuperSport United on penalties in Durban but head into Friday night’s match (8pm kick off) on the back of a 0-2 home defeat to Bidvest Wits on Tuesday.

The Team of Choice were meanwhile involved in a 0-0 KZN derby draw in Umlazi against AmaZulu, which extended their unbeaten run to four matches and four clean sheets, although greater proficiency in front of goal remains an area to be improved upon.

“The positive thing is the four clean sheets in a row,” coach Fadlu Davids said. “But we have to work on our attacking, we have to get more fluent up front, our movement, our final passing, taking better decisions in the final third, but it’s a work in progress.”

Friday’s match will be the third in 12 days for the Team of Choice, and coach Fadlu says there is a possibility of a changed starting XI.

“We’ll have to analyse the players and see which ones are able to play again in such a short space of time, and then we’ll decide the tactical plan. Andrea Fileccia will be available, we have to use the squad when we play in such a short space of time, against two very tough teams,” he said.

Looking at what Cape Town City has in store for Maritzburg, the coach revealed:

“They deserved to beat us and knock us out the cup and to win the cup. That is done – we were still finding out feet at that time.

“Now we are a bit better, but it will be a similar game, open football, both teams trying to attack. Like I always say, it won’t be about who has the best players out on the pitch, but who has the best team.

“Its credit to [CT City coach Benni McCarthy] how he has transformed the team. Bringing in players from Europe, really top signings to strengthen the team and take the team to the next step, and that’s definitely where they are this season.”
