BARTMAN PRAISE FOR STEELY UNITED DEFENCE

Maritzburg United goalkeeper coach Arthur Bartman believes that a consistent back line coupled with good communication are the key elements to their water-tight defence this season.

The Team of Choice have been resolute at the back this season and five clean sheets in a row is testament to that.

This is even more prevalent considering those shut-outs where against the likes of Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs, title-contenders

Bidvest Wits and the MTN8 champions Cape Town City.

Whatever way you look at it, coach Fadlu Davids' men have been solid at the back.

One of the men behind this is coach Arthur, who feels consistency in selection has been key.

“I think the consistent back line and Richard Ofori have been great," he says. "It’s very important because if you chop and change your defence and goalkeeper you are bound to concede goals.

"In football you need a consistent defensive line and a goalkeeper.I always speak to the goalkeepers about communication. That’s how I was taught, communication is key for a goalkeeper,”

In Ofori, Bongani Mpandle, Jethren Barr and Constandino Christodoulou, the much-travelled shot-stopper has an abundance of talent to work with at the Team of Choice.

He believes that competition for places in the goalkeeping department is also vital so that everyone is kept on their toes and ready to pull on the jersey if called upon.

“Yes it’s very good, competition in the goalkeeping department is good for the team as a whole. We must push each other to improve,” Bartman adds.

The Pietermaritzburg outfit are gearing up for a weekend cup tie in the last 16 of the Telkom Knockout against Highlands Park. The game will be played on Saturday at the Harry Gwala Stadium with kick-off at 20h15.
