MARITZBURG OUT TO SET TKO RECORD STRAIGHT

It was back in 2010 when Maritzburg United last had a significant run in the Telkom Knockout, making it as far as the semi-finals before going down to Orlando Pirates.

Unlike the Nedbank Cup, in which the Team of Choice went all the way to the final last year, the Pietermaritzburg-based club have battled to make inroads into the Telkom Knockout.

The exception was in 2010. That was when United shocked Mamelodi Sundowns with a 2-0 win at Harry Gwala Stadium, before edging Bloemfontein Celtic 2-1 in a quarter-final at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium. The final however eluded them after losing 3-0 to Orlando Pirates in Chatsworth.

United have also suffered some bad luck in recent seasons, losing in the first round of the 2016 and 2017 TKO's on penalties - against Kaizer Chiefs and Platinum Stars respectively.

This season for the 2018 edition, the Team of Choice have been paired with Highlands Park in the opening round, at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday 20 October.

The Pietermaritzburg outfit can look for inspiration from last season's heroics in the Nedbank Cup as they prepare to set the record straight in the Telkom Knockout competition.
