COACH FADLU HAILS CHARACTER OF BOYS

Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids hailed the character of his players after they came from a goal down to beat Highlands Park and reach the quarter-finals of the Telkom Knockout on Saturday.

Goals from Siphesihle Ndlovu and Mohau Mokate late on at the Harry Gwala Stadium were the first for United all season at their fortress and turned the game on its head as they progressed with a 2-1 scoreline.

"We made a mistake in our build up and we conceded a goal and then we were a bit rattled, we could have conceded a second but credit to the players, coach Fadlu said.

"We didn't just start panicking and kicking long balls into the box, when you behind normally you do that. We stuck to our principles and kept playing our football. I think that was the most encouraging part."

Coach Fadlu was also pleased that his side finally managed some goals. They had only scored twice previously all season and they have now doubled that tally.

"We've showed we've sorted out the defensive frailties, now really showing the character to correct the attacking part is the first step only," the coach added.

"We still have to improve a lot that's for sure. It's extremely difficult that if you make a mistake in your build up and if you lose the ball in the midfield and they score, that you are apprehensive to still build up.

"Our players had to be really be brave. Have the courage and confidence to to take the ball and build up from the back again."

The Team of Choice are amongst the four seeded teams, the other three being Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, and will avoid them all in the next round.

The draw for the quarter-final takes place on Tuesday evening after the AmaZulu and Cape Town City game concludes the round of 16 of the TKO.
