UNITED GEAR UP FOR SHOWDOWN WITH RISE AND SHINE

Maritzburg United midfielder Fortune Makaringe wants to build some winning momentum as the Team of Choice face Polokwane City in an Absa Premiership match in the Limpopo province on Saturday.

United approach the game at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium (15H30 kick off) in a positive frame of mind having come from a goal down to beat Highlands Park 2-1 in their most recent encounter, a Telkom Knockout game at the Harry Gwala Stadium last weekend.

That victory was a big morale booster for the players, says Makaringe, who superbly created the assist for the winning goal scored by Mohau Mokate.

“It meant a lot for us to get that first win at home for our home fans. It gave us a lot of hope so we want to push now to get more victories at home. We had been playing well, but were just missing that win. We made a pledge to ourselves that when we’re playing at home we need to bring joy to our fans.

“It (creating goal-scoring chances in the opposition box) comes with confidence, and the more I go forward, the more I become productive for the team,” he added.

Playing Rise and Shine in their own backyard will provide a different kind of test to what Maritzburg were up against in the Cup, but the key says the silky-skilled Makaringe, is for United to focus and believe in their own abilities.

“Polokwane City is a very good team who has been doing well this season. Every team in the league is tough. We are ready. The main focus is on ourselves. We always remind ourselves, it’s not about the opposition, but what we possess and what we can do as a team,” Makaringe concluded.

Maritzburg are currently on a five match unbeaten streak in the league, although four of those games ended in draws, leaving the Team of Choice in 13th spot with seven points.

Polokwane City are currently one of the form teams in the Absa Premiership and are in sixth position on 14 points after three wins and two draws in their last five outings, including a 1-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in their most recent league action.

Last season’s corresponding match in Polokwane ended 0-0, while Maritzburg beat Rise and Shine 2-1 at home.
