FADLU ENCOURAGED DESPITE CUP EXIT

Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids has praised his team's fighting spirit even though they fell to a second straight defeat in as many games when they were knocked out of the Telkom Knockout at the weekend.

The Team of Choice lost 2-1 to Bidvest Wits in an end-to-end encounter at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

They found themselves two goals down and chasing the game and, despite a late fight back and a goal by Justice Figareido to bring them back into the contest, it was too little, too late.

A Nazeer Allie own goal and a Buhle Mkhwanazi header gave the Students a 2-0 half-time. A spirited second half performance similar to the one in the previous round against Highlands Park looked to be on the cards for the home side when second half substitute Figareido lashed home his first goal for the club in the 70th minute.

But it was not to be as they succumbed to defeat once again.

"We bow out of the competition with our heads held up high," coach Fadlu said. "With real spirit in the performance, not laying down and giving up. That’s exactly what it’s about. We got a goal back and really pushed to get the equaliser which I’m sure if we did we would have gone on to get a third. The momentum was with us.”

Coach Fadlu was impressed by the way his team fought back in the second half despite the Clever Boys holding out for the victory.

He says that they will take the positives into their next fixture.

“The character was there from the players. You can’t be too disappointed, rather we have to take the positives out from this game. We have to take this second half performance into our next game to get the three points,” he added.

The Team of Choice can set things right and return to winning ways as early as this Friday evening when they host Highlands Park at the Harry Gwala Stadium in an Absa Premiership game. Kick-off is at 20h00.
