HIGHLANDS PARK SPOIL THE PARTY

Maritzburg United had looked set for victory, but Highlands Park had other ideas as they snatched a 2-2 Absa Premiership draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.

The Team of Choice had twice been in front – first through Yannick Zakri and then Mohau Mokate, but Lindokuhle Mbatha and Mothobi Mvala both scored equalisers to deny Fadlu Davids’ men a home win.

There was an early chance for United when Fortune Makaringe fired a shot over the bar after just two minutes played.

The KZN Capital City side were to play some enterprising football in the first half and looking an increasing threat in attack as the game progressed.

It did however take a superb reflex save from Richard Ofori to keep the visitors off the score-sheet as the Ghana-born keeper got down smartly to keep out Tendai Ndoro’s snap shot.

The Team of Choice were to take what was a deserved lead shortly afterwards when Siphesihle Ndlovu played in Makaringe, who produced a brilliant cross from a difficult position to find Zakri, who scored with a well-timed headed effort; 1-0 in the 23rd minute.

Buoyed by the goal, Maritzburg continued to dish up some excellent football much to the delight of their home faithful, although they failed to create any further clear-cut chances in the first half, while Highlands Park had little more than a couple of sniffs at goal.

The Lions of the North came out after the restart and silenced the Harry Gwala Stadium with a 46th minute equaliser after a long ball fell to Ndoro, who teed up Mbatha for the strike past Ofori and into the net.

The men from Maritzburg were however to show their mettle as they came storming back to reclaim the advantage with a 50th minute goal from Mokate, who attacked the near post with real purpose to get onto Deolin Mekoa’s corner and flash a header into goal.

But once again the Lions of the North were to restore parity when Mvala headed home from a Luckyboy Mokoena cross in the 69th minute.

It then took a magnificent save from Ofori, who took the ball off the feet of a goalbound Moeketsi Sekola after he had gone clean through on goal with seven minutes to play.

Maritzburg pushed hard for a late winner, but some resolute defending from the Lions of the North meant they had to settle for the solitary point.
