MARITZBURG FOUR SET FOR AFCON ACTION

Four Maritzburg United stars – Richard Ofori, Siyanda Xulu, Fortune Makaringe and Justice Figuaredo, will be involved in 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers this weekend.

Team of Choice skipper Xulu (pictured below) and midfield maestro Makaringe (above) are of course in the Bafana Bafana squad which is set to take on Nigeria in a crunch encounter at the FNB Stadium at 3pm on Saturday afternoon.

A victory for South Africa, who beat the Super Eagles 2-0 in Nigeria in the first leg encounter, will ensure that Bafana qualify for the 2019 AFCON finals in Cameroon.

Bafana currently have eight points and are unbeaten; yet to concede a goal in their four qualifiers, while Nigeria are top of Group E with nine points after three consecutive wins. Libya are third with four points.

Also not playing too far from home this weekend is Figuaredo, whose Swaziland side host Niger at the Mavuso Sports Centre in Manzini on Sunday.

Figuaredo (above) has put in some exciting performances for United of late and will be looking forward to replicating that form for his country, although Swaziland are out of contention for qualifying, with Egypt and Tunisia already having booked their places in Cameroon.

Ghana goalkeeper Ofori (pictured below) meanwhile must travel to Addis Ababa for a crucial showdown with Ethiopia. The Black Stars are on three points, with Ethiopia in second spot on four points, while Kenya top Group F on seven points.

With Sierra Leone disqualified from Group F, Maritzburg defender Brian Onyango and his Kenyan team-mates are not in action this weekend.
