GETTING TO KNOW MOHAU MOKATE BETTER

Team of Choice Media Officer, Nigel Naicker, sat down with the striker to chat about his journey and his targets for the remainder of the season.

Mohau Mokate grew up in Rustenburg playing both cricket and football. He opted to focus on the latter and quickly found himself at ABC Motsepe side, Orbit College, before signing his first ever pro deal at the Maritzburg United in 2014.

N.N.: What does playing for Maritzburg United mean to you?

M.M.: It means a lot to me, it's a team that is close to my heart. I got my first professional contract here at Maritzburg and they treat me like family. I'm very happy here.

N.N.: Did you always want to be a striker?
M.M.:
Yes, ever since I started playing soccer, I have always played as a striker.

N.N.: Who was your idol growing up and watching football?
M.M.:
Andriy Shevchenko, Karim Benzema and also someone that I really liked was Luis Ronaldo.

N.N.: If you weren't playing football, what other career path would you have chosen?
M.M.:
Cricket, I used to play cricket a lot when I was younger, I was an all-rounder.

N.N.: your best mate at Maritzburg and why?
M.M.
: Deolin Mekoa. He is crazy like me. He is also my roommate, I am always with him. We share jokes, facts about life, we speak about everything. He's always smiling. So sometimes when I am feeling down he always puts a smile on my face and cheers me up.

N.N.: What drives you as a footballer?
M.M.:
I am always trying to become a better player so I want to give more. I still want to prove that I am the best, people have not seen my quality yet. I want to show them.

N.N.: Do you have any individual targets to reach this season?
M.M.:
I don't want to put myself under unnecessary pressure but if I can score more than 10 goals it will be great.
