In what was an evenly-balanced game, Chippa had the better of the first half chances, with Fadlu Davids’ men pushing hard for a winner in the second half, but to no avail.
After both sides enjoyed a positive start to the match, it was Chippa who had the first chance when Thabo Rakhale’s sixth minute snap-shot whistled past the upright.
The home side were to put some promising passages of play together, but despite some good deliveries into the box from the likes of Deolin Mekoa, there was no end-product for the KZN team.
Maritzburg keeper Richard Ofori was called into action midway through the first half when he did well to save a shot from Ruzaigh Gamildien shot before getting down smartly to clear Rakhale’s dangerous 26th minute cross.
United then had a chance when Brian Onyango’s header from a corner flew over the bar before Ofori again showed his class when he came out to deny Gamildien after he had gone clean in on goal eight minutes before the break, in what proved to be the final clear-cut chance of the first half.
With the sizable home crowd spurring their side on, the Team of Choice showed good intent after the interval, but again they battled to prise open the opposition defence.
At the other end, Chippa continued to pose a threat and Rakhale went close with a half-volley in the 67th minute before his close-range effort four minutes later struck Gamildien as the net beckoned.
It was more like with 15 minutes to play for Maritzburg as Fortune Makaringe played a neat one-two with Andrea Fileccia but then struck his parting shot straight at Chippa keeper Akpeyi.
The Team of Choice remained on the front-foot and were to put some relentless pressure on Chippa in the closing 10 minutes.
But still it wouldn’t fall for them in front of goal as Fileccia miscued a shot before Mxolisi Kunene had an effort blocked and Onyango sent a header skimming just over the crossbar from a Timothy Atouba corner kick in the 90th minute.
Maritzburg will now prepare for Saturday’s clash with Orlando Pirates in Soweto.
