While Team of Choice keeper Richard Ofori made some superb saves at the Orlando Stadium to keep out Bucs’ dangerous attack, Maritzburg also had chances of their own and hit the woodwork in the second half.
Ofori was to make his first save of the night after 10 minutes – showing world class reflexes to keep out Justin Shonga from close range.
Fortune Makaringe then forced a save from Bucs stopper Siyabonga Mpontshane from a tight angle before Ofori was called into action again in the 18th minute, doing well to keep out a stinging drive from Thembinkosi Lorch.
Maritzburg then enjoyed a promising spell of play and Andrea Fileccia had a 27th shot deflected onto the net before firing a volley over eight minutes later.
A few minutes before the interval , it took a superb tackle by Brian Onyango on Mulenga to stop him from pulling the trigger right in front of goal.
The game remained evenly balanced after half time as United matched the Buccaneers blow for blow.
After Ofori has made a diving save to keep out Vincent Pule’s free kick 15 minutes from time, the KZN Capital City club were inches from scoring when after some neat interplay, Deolin Mekoa smashed a 25-yards effort against the crossbar.
Ofori, who was named Man-of-the-Match, had some late saves to make as he flew off his line to prevent a goal-bound Mulenga from scoring before also keeping out an audacious long range effort from Lorch.
To their credit, the Team of Choice continued to probe for a winner, and they had a couple of sniffs at goal themselves, the best falling to Rushine de Reuck three minutes from time, but his shot flew straight at home keeper Mpontshane.
The result moves United up to 12th spot on the standings.
