'PIRATES DRAW LIKE A CHESS GAME'

Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids has praised his young squad for their tactically astute and gritty performance away to the Absa Premiership’s form team, Orlando Pirates, at the weekend.

The Team of Choice have just a solitary victory to their name all season but still went toe-to-toe with the Soweto giants in a goalless draw.

The Buccaneers forced the visitors back and created many opportunities through the lively Justin Shonga but the United defended resolutely and had goalkeeper, Richard Ofori, to thank for helping them secure the result.

The Ghana number one pulled off a string of saves to win the Man of the Match award and bag a sixth clean sheet in the process as they came away from the Orlando Stadium with a vital point.

“It was like a game of chess," coach Fadlu explained. "We make one move, they make two moves to counter our move and then we have to react.

"But they are a fantastic side, they really pushed us back. We didn’t want to defend so deep.

"They had chances, you know we knew which spaces they wanted to play in so that’s a little disappointing, the chances we conceded.

"It could have been a smash and grab at the end but I’m proud of the players. We have to take this as a morale booster, as a win in our eyes and build confidence.

"That is what it’s about, these players have to believe how good they really are. Tactically they followed the game plan to the tee.”

Coach Fadlu reiterated his strong belief in his players and is adamant that they will repay the fans as they look to find some upward momentum and kick start their campaign.

"We need to start our season now," he added. "These players are working hard so hard week in, week out and the luck is not falling for them but they have to continue because once it turns, we know what we can achieve, we know what they can produce.

"I urge the supporters to come out in this next game and support these players. The young players, we can’t break them down. We have to support them and they will turn it around and then we will see the shining stars really unlocking their potential and that is what it’s about now in the next ten days."

Davids and his team are back in action on the December 12 when they host Black Leopards at the Harry Gwala Stadium. Kick-off is at 19h30.
