LEOPARDS CLASH ENDS ALL SQUARE

Maritzburg United and Black Leopards battled it out to a 1-1 Absa Premiership draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Maritzburg made a bright start to the game, playing some enterprising football, although they had to wait until the 20th minute for their first opening on goal - but after Yannick Zakri picked up a loose ball and charged forwards, he was stopped in his tracks by Leopards keeper Rotshidzwa Muleka, just outside the box.

There was another close moment for United five minutes later when Siphesihle Ndlovu went past his marker before playing in Zakri, but he was unable to pick out Andrea Fileccia.

Team of Choice keeper Richard Ofori had his first serious work of the night when he pushed Karabo Tshepe's volley over the bar 10 minutes before the interval.

It was United who drew first blood as they took a 38th minute lead after Kenyan international Brian Onyango headed home from a Deolin Mekoa free kick.

But the advantage was short-lived as Leopards were awarded a penalty six minutes later and Mwape Musonda beat Ofori from the spot, 1-1 in the 44th minute.

The home side came out looking for a winner in the second half, but were unable to create many clear-cut chances against a resolute Lidoda Duvha backline.

There were some opportunities - Mekoa's 53rd minute free kick was saved by Muleka, and Mohau Mokate went close with a volley six minutes from time after having done well to fire his effort in on the turn.

But it was to prove to be frustrating end to the game for the Team of Choice as they failed to pierce the Leopards defence and had to settle for the point.

Next up for the Pietermaritzburg team is a league match against SuperSport United in Pretoria on Saturday evening.

Head Coach Fadlu Davids on the draw:

"We are doing everything right but putting the ball in the back of the net. That's what we've got to work on. We have to be more clinical and aggressive in front of goal. Let's hope we can correct it against SuperSport."

Midfielder Deolin Mekoa:

MARITZBURG LINE-UP:

Staring XI: Ofori, Kunene, Xulu, Onyango, De Reuck, Mekoa, Makaringe, Zakri, Shandu, Ndlovu, Fileccia.

Subs: Mpandle, Thlone, Mokate, Atouba, Sanoka, Makgalwa, Figareido.
