The Team of Choice made a bright start to the game in Nelspruit, enjoying some early chances, but they were unable to make it count as Deolin Mekoa fired a shot wide and then had another effort saved by Ronwen Williams.
At the other end of the park, some outstanding defending from the Team of Choice meant that Matsatsantsa failed to threaten their goal in the first half.
United had another chance before half time when Man of the Match Rushine De Reuck reacted quickly to fire goalwards, with team-mate Brian Onyango just unable to get a head on the ball to steer it into the net.
SuperSport had the first chance after half time when Evans Rusike crossed for Aubrey Modiba, who missed the target from close range.
The complexion of the game was changed on the hour mark when Pogiso Sanoka was ruled to have clipped James Keene in the box and Modiba beat Richard Ofori from the penalty spot.
The KZN Capital City club regrouped and went searching for an equaliser, but with SuperSport happy to get men behind the ball, chances were at a premium.
The Team of Choice’s best opportunity at an equaliser came seven minutes before the end of regulation time when Keletso Makgalwa’s low drive flew marginally wide of the post.
Maritzburg will now return home for their final match of 2018 – against Baroka FC at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday 22 December.
Reaction from Coach Fadlu:
