MARITZBURG EDGED OUT BY BAKGAGA

Visiting side Baroka FC ended 1-0 winners over Maritzburg United in a tightly-contested Absa Premiership match at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday night.

On a wet evening with not too many clearcut chances, Jemondre Dickens' goal just before the interval proved the difference.

After an opening period in which neither team were able to penetrate the opposition defence, Maritzburg keeper Richard Ofori was called into action on the 30 minute mark to keep out Tshidiso Patjie.

Dickens then struck the bar with a free kick before he gave the TKO champions the lead in the first minute of added time in the opening half, when he planted a looping header into the net.

The same player was to be denied by the woodwork for a second time when a deflected effort hit the bar on the hour mark.

The Team of Choice upped their efforts in the final quarter of the game as they went in search of an equaliser.

They came close in the 70th minute when Fortune Makaringe's shot from an acute angle was cleared off the line by Bakgaga defender Goodman Mosele, while at the other end, Maritzburg defender Rushine de Reuck went inches wide of his own goal with an 82nd minute clearance.

The KZN Capital City club showed good fight as they upped the ante even further in the dying moments of the match, but they received no reward as Makaringe's shot was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze before Yannick Zakri's header from the resultant corner hit the crossbar.

Maritzburg starting XI: Ofori, Kunene, Xulu, De Reuck, Atouba, Onyango, Mekoa, Makaringe, Zakri, Makgalwa, Mokate.

Subs: Mpandle, Thlone, Shandu, Allie, Fileccia, Figareido, Ndlovu.
