The game takes place at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Sunday afternoon, 3.30pm kick off.
The Team of Choice have a score to settle with Abafana bes’Thende, who claimed a 2-0 win at the Harry Gwala Stadium in a first round league encounter at the start of this season.
Maritzburg have also gone seven league and cup matches without beating Arrows; the last time they got the better of their KZN rivals was in a 2-0 league win in March of 2016.
Overall, the head-to-head record between the two clubs reads: six victories for United, 10 for Arrows, and seven draws.
Newly-appointed Maritzburg head coach Muhsin Ertugral, together with new assistant coach Mabhuti Khenyeza, has been hard at work with his new team since arriving just over a week ago, and he will be hoping that his fresh ideas and energy can inject some confidence into the team.
“We are working on it, we want to get the confidence back again and move off the foot of the table,” coach Muhsin said. “The eagerness needs to be channelled. It looks good, I’m very happy.”
Maritzburg will find themselves up against a familiar face in former Team of Choice head coach Steve Komphela, who will also be in charge for his first game at his new club, while coach Muhsin and Khenyeza have both previously been employed by Arrows themselves.
The new United chief has also worked with Komphela before, and this could add another fascinating dimension as the two former comrades try to outwit each other with their tactics on the day.
“I know the coach - Steve was my first assistant coach at Kaizer Chiefs,” said coach Muhsin. “I believe in his habits. I know him from Turkey as well. He has come a long way and I hope Mabhuti can follow in his footsteps.
“Steve is a very good coach, I know his thinking, the way he operates. I like him as a human being, we are good friends.”
The Team of Choice head into the game occupying 16th spot on the table (on 11 points), but a win should in all likelihood lift them out of the relegation zone. Abafana bes’Thende are in 11th position, with 16 points.
