STARS STUN MARITZBURG

Maritzburg United were unable to defend their first half lead as they went down 2-1 to Free Stars Stars in an Absa Premiership game at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Team of Choice had started the game well, and had early chances as Keletso Makgalwa's second minute cross just failed to reach Andrea Fileccia, before Makgalwa had his own effort deflected wide of goal.

After a period which saw the two sides evenly matched, Ea Lla Koto began to impose themselves and they enjoyed chances on goal as Yusuf Jappie's shot was cleared off the line by Brian Onyango, before the same player twice went close with free kicks.

United were however to end the half on top as Mxolisi Kunene sprinted down the left wing before pulling the ball back for Yazid Atouba, who touched it on for Mekoa, who coolly slotted into the bottom corner of the net from 20-yards out in the sixth minute of added time.

Stars came out with intent in the second stanza and nearly scored when Patrick Phungwayo crossed for Makhehlene Makhaula, but he missed the target from just six yards out.

The visitors were back on even terms in the 74th minute when Nyiko Mobbie's cross was touched by Sinethemba Jantjie into the path of Mokhuoane, who got the ball into the net from close range.

Stars’ winner came six minutes later when Mokhuoane's poor first touch in the box fell nicely to Jantjie, who slammed in a volley from 16-yards out into the bottom corner.

Makgalwa was close to grabbing an injury time equaliser for the Team of Choice, but he fired the ball across goal and wide of the target.
