MARITZBURG GO DOWN FIGHTING TO SUNDOWNS

Maritzburg United made Mamelodi Sundowns sweat for their 1-0 Absa Premiership win at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night.

The KZN Capital City side looked bright and inventive going forward and had their opportunities on the night, but just couldn't get the ball in the opposition net.

United played some exciting attacking football in the first half, and created a number of good scoring chances. After Thabiso Kutumela had an early effort kept out by Kennedy Mweene, Rushine De Reuck twice went close with headers just off target.

At the other end, Sundowns were also a threat going forward and Richard Ofori was kept busy keeping out efforts from Anthony Laffor, Gaston Sirino and Themba Zwane.

Maritzburg continued to ask question of the Brazilians defence and were perhaps unfortunate not to have been awarded a penalty after Hlompho Kekana had a clumsy challenge on Siphesihle Ndlovu.

The game wide open, Ofori made another save to keep out Themba Zwane, before the same player had a goal ruled off-sides.

The Team of Choice ended the first half on top, but just couldn’t make the breakthrough as the lively Kutumela dragged an effort inches wide after a neat move in the box, before Fortune Makaringe had a shot blocked and then Brian Onyango headed over from a corner kick just before the interval.

Masandawana got on top after the break and Ofori was at his brilliant best to tip Kekana’s deflected shot over the bar before the Team of Choice survived a goalmouth scramble two minutes later.

Sundowns made the breakthrough on 59 minutes as Kekana rifled in a thunderous 25-yards shot, despite Ofori doing well to get a touch.

The Ghana international soon had more work as he tipped over a Sirino shot and then blocked Lebo Maboe’s shot with his feet before making a superb reflex save on Kekana’s volley.

Maritzburg though were always in the match and after several half chances, Onyango arrived late in the box to get on a cross in the final seconds of the game, only to steer the ball at Sundowns keeper Kennedy Mweene from close range as luck eluded the Team of Choice once more.
