On a scorching hot day in the Mother City, United suffered an early setback when former Maritzburg defender Thami Mkhize headed home a seventh minute corner for the Citizens.
The Cape side continued to dominate possession, although Maritzburg did well to protect Richard Ofori in goal.
Towards the latter stages of the first half the Team of Choice threatened with Mxolisi Kunene down the left flank, but unfortunately the City defence held firm against a couple of dangerous crosses.
The Citizens threatened early in the second half through a Craig Martin shot, but when Maritzburg’s chance came just after the hour mark they took it as Kunene raced in to the box and finished with a low shot past Peter Leeuwenburgh to make it 1-1.
However, the hosts regained the lead less than 10 minutes later when Gift Links picked up possession on the left hand side of the box and sent a blazing drive into the far corner.
Riyaad Norodien then scored via a deflected shot in the 82nd minute to make it 3-1 to the Citizens.
The Team of Choice were not about to throw in the towel though and when Judas Moseamedi got to the byline and pulled the ball back, Fortune Makaringe powered in a first time effort to reduce the deficit to one.
United were all over City in the final 10 minutes of the match, but it just wouldn’t fall for them in front of goal as the hosts threw bodies on the line to secure the win.
