MARITZBURG IN DRAMATIC LATE KZN DERBY WIN

Judas Moseamedi scored in the 92nd minute as Maritzburg United came from behind beat AmaZulu 2-1 in a thrilling Absa Premiership match at a packed Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.

The hosts put a rousing display on a wet evening, but despite dominating the game, they ended up having to show huge character to score through Fortune Makaringe and Moseamedi in the closing 15 minutes.

The Team of Choice started on a positive note, playing some front foot football and taking the game to AmaZulu.

And after a couple of corners and half chances, the home team looked set to take the lead when Thabiuso Kutumela fired in a beautifully-flighted free kick, only for the ball to come back off the woodwork.

United were looking dangerous on attack, and with 30 minutes played, Yannick Zakri showed electric pace to drive 50-metres up field, but AmaZulu keeper Siyabonga Mbatha was somehow able to keep out the parting shot with his legs.

It had been all Maritzburg during the first half, but cruelly it was the Durban team who were to score the opener as Bandile Shandu’s attempted clearance of a Talent Chawapiwa cross went in for an own goal.

The Team of Choice showed good character as they came storming straight back in first half added time, but it wouldn’t fall their way as Shandu's shot deflected off van Heerden and marginally wide and then Mbatha affected a point-blank save on Nazeer Allie.

The KZN Capital City side continued to threaten after the restart as Mxolisi Kunene came within inches of finding the net before Mbatha made an unbelievable save with his feet to keep out Kutumela’s volley from close range just after the hour mark.

Despite luck not going their way, Team of Choice players showed great guts as they kept on fighting and they finally got the goal they deserved when Makaringe got the ball into the net from close range in the 76th minute after Mbatha saved Allie’s initial header.

With the capacity crowd off their feet and the atmosphere electric as United went looking for a win, Kunene beat two men down the left before crossing into the box, where Mohau Mokate sent a cushioned header into the path of Moseamedi, who finished sublimely with a first-time effort from 12-yards out deep in added time.
