MARITZBURG OFF TO WINNING START IN THE PLAY-OFFS

Maritzburg United held firm in the face of some late pressure from Royal Eagles at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday afternoon to record a 1-0 win.

Eagles had beaten Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila 1-0 at Chatsworth on Wednesday in the first promotion-relegation play-off game, leaving the two KZN sides on three points.

Maritzburg now head off to the Thohoyandou Stadium for their match against Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila on Wednesday, 3pm.

In their game against Eagles, the Team of Choice were on top for the first hour, but had to work hard in the final portion of the game to keep the National First Division (NFD) side from equalising.

United had some good early chances but couldn’t make them count as Thabiso Kutumela’s 25-yard effort went just over the bar Eagles keeper Patrick Nyame made two fantastic saves to keep out a shot from Miguel Timm and a header from Rushine De Reuck.

At the other end, the Durban team’s best chance saw Victor Bakah firing a volley just voer the bar after 17 minutes.

Some sloppy play from the visitors’ defence was then nearly punished on the half hour mark when Mohau Mokate fired goalwards, but Nyame made a brave point-blank stop.

With 36 minutes played, Maritzburg got what turned out to the winner when De Reuck hooked the ball towards Nazeer Allie in the opposition box, and although Allie was unable to get contact on a difficult volley Kutumela was well positioned at the back post to slot in a low shot from a tight angle.

Mxolisi Kunene could have added a second goal for United shortly after the restart, but from close range his touch let him down and Nyame was able to make the save.

Fortune Makaringe then came close for Maritzburg as his shot from a Bandile Shandu cross hit the side-net.

From that point on though the KZN Capital City side found themselves increasingly under pressure.

There were a couple of near misses from Eagles, and also a couple of important blocks from the United defenders, not to mention two superb saves from Richard Ofori, as Maritzburg held on doggedly to see out the win.

Maritzburg Starting XI: Ofori, Allie, Xulu, De Reuck, Kunene, Makaringe, Timm, Ndlovu, Kutumela, Shandu, Mokate
Subs: Moseamedi, Kateregga, Onyango, Mpandle, Matsi, Hlongwane, Mekoa
