Substitute Judas Moseamedi was vital to the cause as he came off the bench to score the opener before providing an assist for Bongokuhle Hlongwane.
Before that, the Team of Choice had dominated play, but had been struggling to capitalise on their chances.
The first opportunities of the game fell to the KZN team, but Mohau Mokate fired a 15th minute shot over the bar and then had a close range effort blocked after some fantastic work in the box by Siphesihle Ndlovu had created the opening.
Tshakhuma’s only chance of the first half came when Maritzburg keeper Richard Ofori took too long to clear a back-pass before recovering just in time to deny Lehlohonolo Nhlapo.
Hlongwane had two decent opportunities soon after the interval, but again the score remained unchanged as he shot over the bar and also went wide with a header.
United though maintained their composure and when Deolin Mekoa whipped in a great cross in the 67th minute, Moseamedi arched his body at the back post to net with a brilliant header.
The second goal arrived in the 82nd minute, when after Moseamedi had received the ball out on the right flank and the home side’s defence switched off, the big man was able to thread in Hlongwane, who obliged as he ran clear in on goal and scored with a neat finish.
It was comfortable for Maritzburg from there on in as the hosts offered little in the way of a fight-back, the United defence holding firm as they had throughout the whole game to keep the clean sheet.
