The only goal of a tight match was scored just after half time by Michael Gumede.
The first half was a bit of a disjointed affair, and with both sides seemingly still shaking off the cobwebs of off-season, there was little in the way of goalmouth action at either end of the field.
There were a couple of early corners for the Team of Choice as they showed some early intent, while at the other end,
Siphamandla Sibeko fired over a decent opportunity over the bar in the 17th minute.
However, with the two defences looking strong and compact, both teams struggled to threaten the opposition goal.
The complexion of the game was changed just after the interval as Gumede ran onto a pass and coolly lifted the ball over Maritzburg keeper Richard Ofori.
The Team of Choice showed a good response as they tried to reclaim parity, but they weren’t able to capitalise on a couple of chances as Deolin Mekoa hit the bar with a left foot volley before Gabriel Nyoni's header was cleared off the line.
It just wasn’t to be United’s afternoon as Arrows continued to repel their attacks, and it’s now back to the drawing board for head coach Eric Tinkler and his men as we prepare for the first home match of the season – against Highlands Park at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.
