The Absa Premiership match against Bakgaga kicks off at the Harry Gwala Stadium at 19h30 and will see the Team of Choice seeking a second consecutive victory, following last Friday’s 1-0 win over Chippa United.
Maritzburg had played some excellent attacking football in the first half against the Chilli Boys and went 1-0 up through a Thabiso Kutumela goal. They failed to match that fluency in the second half, but that was compensated by some good old hard graft as the hosts defended resolutely towards the end of the game to wrap up the three points.
Head coach Eric Tinkler will be expecting to see more of that same desire and determination on Wednesday against Bakgaga, who in 11th spot on the Premier Soccer League (PSL) table, are two positions and three points above the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands club.
Baroka come into the game on the back of a 1-0 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in a match in which they pushed the Glamour Boys all the way and were unlucky not to take anything from the game after hitting the post twice in added time.
“We have just got to continue working the way we have been working - we are not going to change anything,” coach Eric said.
“It’s another tough game, very difficult game, but there are no easy games in this league.
“But we want to dictate, we want to dominate our home matches,” he continued.
“So as much as we think Baroka are good and that we need to show them a certain amount of respect, we need to come out and put on a performance like we did in the first half against Chippa United.”
Maritzburg also have a score to settle with Baroka, after their 1-0 win at the Harry Gwala Stadium last season.
That was the first time the Limpopo-based team had beaten United – in the six games the sides have played, Maritzburg have won four, with one draw.
