Mxolisi Kunene scored the only goal of the night, five minutes after half time – against his former club.
Baroka started the game full of purpose and United found themselves on the back foot as the visitors had a succession of early chances.
They were close to taking the lead after 15 minutes played when Richard Mbulu hit the crossbar after a ball into the box by Matome Mabeba.
Mbulu also dragged a shot across goal and inches wide of the far post, before a clearance from Richard Ofori fell to Manuel Kambala, who looped a header goalwards, with the home defence able to get back in time to scramble the ball to safety.
Tshediso Patjie also went close with a curling effort and Vusi Sibiya headed narrowly wide as United continued to weather the storm.

However, as proceedings neared half time, the Team of Choice were able to step things up a gear or two and started creating openings of their own.
The first saw Kunene having a shot deflected wide, with Rushine de Reuck going agonisingly close with a header from the resultant corner by Daylon Claasen.
Thabiso Kutumela also had a sniff at goal, but directed his header straight at goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze.
Maritzburg were to capitalise on their efforts five minutes into the second stanza, when after a mazy run in which he beat several defenders, Kunene managed to squeeze over the line.
Baroka though almost replied moments later when Martin Nsimbi shot just wide.
The Team of Choice could also have added more goals, but the game remained tighgly poised as Chipezeze kept out a Kunene effort before substitute Judas Moseamedi fired a 76th minute shot just past the right upright after Kutumela’s cross.
That proved to be the last real chance though before United were able to see out the match in relative comfort to secure a morale-boosting second win in six days.
