HARD-FOUGHT DERBY ENDS EVEN

The KwaZulu-Natal derby between Maritzburg United and AmaZulu at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday afternoon ended in a 0-0 draw.

Overall there wasn’t much to choose between the two sides in what was an uncompromising Absa Premiership battle.

Maritzburg started well and were close to scoring early on when Bongokuhle Hlongwane headed a Keegan Buchanan corner just over the bar.

The visitors then appeared to have a probable penalty turned down after eight minutes when Hlongwane seemed to have been tripped by Mario Booysen inside the box.

For the most part though it was a tight affair, with little in the way of free-flowing football from either side, in part due to the bumpy playing surface, and also due to the competitive nature of the derby.

AmaZulu were to have a couple of sniffs at goal midway through the first half, the first falling to Bongi Ntuli, but Nazeer Allie did well to steal the ball away just eight-yards out from goal.

Siyethemba Sithebe then came closest to breaking the deadlock when his 20-yard drive whistled past the post, before Richard Ofori reacted well to keep out a header from Ntuli and then Ovidy Kararu flashed a volley wide.

Maritzburg upped their attacking efforts in the minutes leading up to the interval, but found the home side’s defence to be well focussed.

There was little change to the game after the half time as the two sides continued to scrap for every ball, with clearcut chances continuing to remain at a premium.

As proceedings moved past the hour mark, Maritzburg began to have a couple of openings as Thabiso Kutumela had an effort blocked before Judas Moseamedi fired a volley goalwards, but directed it straight at Neil Boshoff.

Kutumela continued to threaten as he went close with an acrobatic effort before being denied by the foot of Boshoff when trying to squeeze the ball in from a tight angle with seven minutes to play.

The Team of Choice enjoyed the better of the closing stages of the game, but it just wouldn’t fall for them in front of goal as the derby ended in a stalemate.
