MARITZBURG MADE TO SWEAT FOR POLOKWANE CITY WIN

There were some anxious late moments at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon before Maritzburg United clenched a 1-0 Absa Premiership victory over Polokwane City.

The only goal of the game came in the 58th minute, via a sweetly-struck free kick by Yusuf Jappie.

The Team of Choice then passed up on several great chances to add to their tally and as a result had to endure some nervous moments in the closing stages of the match.

From an attacking perspective, the first half proved to be a somewhat lacklustre one for the Team of Choice as they failed to get any shots on the opposition goal.

For their part, the hosts had a handful of shooting chances, but for the most part they were unable to get their attempts on target as Maritzburg keeper Bongani Mpandle, in for the suspended Richard Ofori, remained largely untested.

Polokwane did up the ante in the minutes leading up to the interval, but the scoreline remain unchanged as Bongile Booi shot narrowly wide, Mpandle saved comfortably from Jabulani Maluleke and Sibusiso Hlubi fizzed a free kick into the side-netting.

The Team of Choice were to take the lead 13 minutes after the interval when Miguel Timm was fouled on the edge of the box, with Jappie then curling in a delightful set-piece past George Chigova.

The lead though was nearly short-lived as Rise and Shine captain Maluleke rattled the crossbar with a free kick of his own before Mpho Mvelase flashed a header wide.

But after that, Maritzburg enjoyed their best attacking period of the afternoon.

The problem was that they were guilty of wasteful finishing as Micah Lea’alafa and Judas Moseamedi both failed to score with close range efforts.

With Polokwane pushing ever-harder for a winner, the tension was tangible in the United camp as the match went into added time.

And there was some late drama when the Team of Choice just managed to survive a huge goalmouth scramble in the 94th minute, before breaking up field and looking set to score themselves, only for Chigova to pull off a great reflex save on a shot from Pogiso Sanoka.

Coach Eric Tinkler and his men will now turn their attention to Saturday’s Telkom Knockout final against Mamelodi Sundowns at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
