ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT DESPITE WIN

The three points and the clean sheet were big positives from Sunday's 1-0 win over Polokwane City, although head coach Eric Tinkler was not entirely pleased with Maritzburg United's performance.

The Team of Choice moved up to eighth place on the Absa Premiership standings thanks to Yusuf Jappie’s sublime free kick 10 minutes into the second half at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Following that, United missed a string of chances to put the game to bed, which nearly proved costly as Rise and Shine rallied for a late equaliser.

Some resolute defending did however secure a morale-boosting victory ahead of Saturday’s Telkom Knockout final against Mamelodi Sundowns at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Coach Eric will however be looking for improvements in certain areas of his team’s play as preparations for the final get underway this week.

“We came up against a wounded lion and the problem in the first half is we didn’t take advantage of that,” he said.

“We had a lot of possession in the first half, it was easy for us to go through the lines, break the lines, get in behind them, play in front of them. But final pass was very poor, decision making was poor.

“We spoke about it at half time – we should have punished them but we let them off the hook. And the danger of that is that they (Polokwane) can come back, that they will start growing in confidence. And then we could find ourselves in trouble.

“Second half we started okay, started to create more opportunities than them. We got the goal, but we should have got the second and the third, and we had the chances to really kill off the game.

“We nearly gave it away in the 93rd minute. Our decision making needs to be better, its nerve wracking for me to sit on the bench and watch that. Because its individual errors and basic errors that let us down.”

The focus now shifts to the TKO showdown in Durban, and Maritzburg United are offering two unbeatable supporter deals for the game against Mamelodi Sundowns at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, December 14 (6pm kick off).

BLUE PACKAGE [R300 per person]: Free transport, match ticket and an official replica jersey!

RED PACKAGE [R150 per person]: Free transport, match ticket and a supporter t-shirt!

These packages, as well a range of other exciting club merchandise, are available at the Maritzburg head office in Victoria Road as well as at newly-opened club shop in the Midlands Liberty Mall.
