Igesund happy with pre-season preparations

6 July 2009

Maritzburg United coach Gordon Igesund is content with his team's pre-season preparations.

Compared to last year, the current pre-season has been chalk and cheese – 12 months ago a newly-appointed Igesund was given very little time to compile a squad and the pre-season was nearly non-existent.

As a result, it took the team a while to gel, but as the season went on they got stronger and stronger and ended up finishing in a credible 12th position.

Igesund and his charges now have nearly a month's work behind them, which bodes well for taking the team to greater heights during 2009/ 2010.

“We got a good head-start this time round and the team will be much better for it, we are looking at trialists as we build our team for the coming season," he told Kick Off.

There are also several initiatives on the horizon which couyld benefit the squad even further:

“We will more than likely head down to Cape Town for a week at the Sports Science Institute to gauge our fitness, but that has yet to be confirmed.”

“We will play AmaZulu and Golden Arrows, just to give the guys matches, and then play a tournament towards the end of July as well. We will be in much better shape this time round for the start of the season.”
