Maritzburg lose first league game

20 August 2014

Maritzburg United came back empty handed from their trip to Johannesburg after losing 1-0 to Bidvest Wits.

Sthembiso Ngcobo netted the only goal of the game on 20 minutes after taking advantage from close range following a slip up in the Maritzburg defence.

The Clever Boys kept the pressure on United, who were unable to play the fluent football they have in their last couple of games.

Chances were rare for the Team of Choice, while for the home side, Ngcobo had two further opportunities but headed wide, while goalkeeper Shu-aib Walters was kept especially busy.

Maritzburg had a good chance to level the match in the second half, but Ashley Hartog hammered the ball into the upright 15 minutes from time.

The result leaves United in seventh position on the Absa Premiership standings.

Wits: Mabokgwane, Kwakman, Hlatshwayo, Shongwe, Losper, Vilakazi, Mkhwanazi, Ngcobo, Getaneh, Bhasera, Ntshangase.

Maritzburg:
Walters, Mngonyama, Awal, De Jongh, Matuka, Mkhize, Lentjies, Hartog, Mabaso, Nkosi, Mekoa
