Mngonyama: Onwards and upwards

On-loan Maritzburg United defender Kwanda Mngonyama shares exactly the same goals as the PMB club; to steadily move in the right direction.
Mngonyama has made a very bright start to his loan spell at the Team of Choice, having joined the club from Mamelodi Sundowns after having also done so well for Bidvest Wits on loan last season.
The youthful central defender has already weighed in with two goals for United, and has put in some excellent defensive performances which has helped Maritzburg make an exciting start to the season.
"It's been a dream start, but I'm not getting carried away," the Clermont-born Mngonyama told the PSL website. "I'm at a club that is really looking to improve each and every year. The team that we have assembled is really promising and I'm looking forward to improving all the time.
"Both personally and the club have started well and hopefully we can sustain the levels right through the season and give the club the best possible chance to improve on what it has done in the past."
Mngonyama is determined to make the most of his move to Maritzburg, and is not disappointed at not having been recalled to mother club Sundowns.
"I think the reason was because they have too many players, guys that are in their prime and mature," he said. "I'm still young and I just want to play.
"Football is not about fighting or anything. At the end of the day, I need to be playing and not be sitting on the bench. Gaining experience is what I need to be doing and that's why I am here.
"I did have other options, but working with Steve [Komphela, Maritzburg United head coach] was something that really drew me here. He's a matured coach, a good coach and he knows how to do things the right way.
"Apart from that, it was an opportunity to be with my family whilst doing what I love. Maritzburg is home, my family is around the corner and they have an opportunity to come and see me play."
