Maritzburg United 2-0 Golden Arrows
11 March 2016
Second half goals from Kurt Lentjies and Mohammed Anas saw the Team of Choice picking up three vital points in a 2-0 win over Golden Arrows on Friday night.
Maritzburg played some excellent football on the night, creating regular openings in the Arrows defence, while keeping things tight at the back themselves.
The hosts started the game brightly, and had a good chance when Evans Rusike's seventh minute effort was blocked by Chris Katjiukua.
United keeper Glenn Verbauwhede did well to save from Kudawashe Machachi and then Rodney Ramagalela as the rain bucketed down in Pietermaritzburg.
But it was the Team of Choice who did most of the attacking, Rusike and Philani Zulu keeping the Absafana bes'Thende defence and goalkeeper busy.
Verbauwhede made another good save just after the break when he tipped Machachi's chip over the bar.
The home side were in front on 57 minutes when Lentjies showed good composure to score from close range after Deolin Mekoa’s stinging shot had been parried by visiting keeper Maximilian Mbaeva
Anas then failed to capitalise on two good opportunities in quick succession, going close with the second effort after a smart turn.
But the Ghana striker made no mistake in the 73rd minute on when he showed great pace to sprint onto an outstanding through ball by Rusike, poking the ball beyond an on-rushing Arrows keeper.
The final stages of the game saw Rusike firing over the bar with a volley while Verbauwhede made an outstanding late save to keep the clean sheet as Ernst Middendorp’s side earned a richly deserved three points.
