Maritzburg knocked out of Nedbank Cup by Aces
2 April 2016
Maritzburg United’s 2016 Nedbank Cup run came to an end when they went down 2-0 to MP Black Aces at the Kanyamazane Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Aces scored on 20 minutes through a Collins Mbesuma penalty, the hosts sealing the game in second half added time thanks to Limbikani Mzava’s 93rd minute free kick.
Aces were awarded a penalty in the 19th minute when David Booysen fouled Bhongolethu Jayiya in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.
Mbesuma converted from the spot, beating goalkeeper Tawfeeq Salie.
Three minutes later Kurt Lentjies had a chance to respond and make it 1-1, but his free-kick was tipped away by Shu-Aib Walters for a corner.
With two minutes to the interval, Ryan Moon got a chance to head home Thamsanqa Teyise’s cross, but his header failed to trouble Walters.
In the second half, Mbesuma came close to making it 2-0 when he failed to connect with a low cross from the right from Aubrey Ngoma.
Just after coming on, Gregory Maasdorp nearly made an immediate impact after he missed a good opportunity, beating Walters off his line with a header, but it went inches over the crossbar in the 63rd minute.
With 15 minutes to go, good touches in the middle of the park by Ernst Middendorp's men allowed them to penetrate Aces, but Walters saved Philani Zulu's shot with his legs.
In time added-on, Salie was beaten at the near-post by Mzava after a free kick.
